Jay Chatarpaul is the founder of Chatarpaul Law Firm, P.C. Mr. Chatarpaul has been successfully representing clients for almost two decades in New Jersey and New York and has focused on employment and discrimination cases.
Mr. Chatarpaul specializes in employment discrimination cases, as well as discrimination in non-employment settings, such as retailers and other businesses and institutions. He handles discrimination based on race, age, ethnicity, national origin, disability, medical leave, sex, gender, religion, pregnancy, sexual orientation, and sexual harassment. He also handles retaliation and whistleblower cases, employment contracts, severance agreements, defense of non-compete and non-solicitation agreements and contracts, as well as appeals of employment cases.
Mr. Chatarpaul has successfully defeated numerous summary judgment motions filed by employers’ attorneys and tried numerous employment cases to a verdict in both state and federal courts. He has also argued before appellate courts, including the Appellate Division of the State of New Jersey, the Third Circuit Courts of Appeal in Philadelphia, and the Eastern and Southern District Courts in New York. Mr. Chatarpaul has also defeated numerous motions to compel arbitration filed by defendants.
Mr. Chatarpaul has a daughter, grew up in Queens, New York and attended Flushing High School. He graduated from Brooklyn College in New York with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in History and received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
While in law school, Mr. Chatarpaul was on the Board of Editors of the Buffalo Law Review, which is a prestigious, student-run academic journal that edits and publishes scholarly articles on legal topics written by law students, lawyers and other legal professionals. Legal experts, including law professors, judges, and lawyers often cite to law review articles in their research and analysis of cases and legal publications. During law school, Mr. Chatarpaul was also awarded the Robert J. Connelly Excellence in Trial Technique by the Western New York Trial Association.
Mr. Chatarpaul is licensed to practice law in state and federal courts in New Jersey and New York but currently limits his practice to all state and federal courts in New Jersey and the Southern District of New York.
Prior to concentrating on employment discrimination cases, Mr. Chatarpaul was a Public Defender with the Legal Aid Society of New York, and during his tenure as a public defender, tried dozens of cases before judges and juries in New York. He was also an owner of a restaurant in Queens, and along with his education, training and background, brings real world experience to the courtroom to achieve a successful outcome for clients.
